Community Education...

Free to Grow/Camp Fire
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is a partner--together with other community groups--in this innovative, grant-funded initiative.  Free to Grow focuses on children and families enrolled in the Head Start program to foster “Healthy child development through strengthening families and their communities.”

Two Camp Fire groups meet at Good Shepherd each week, one in English and another in Spanish.

Head Start
Beginning in 2003, Good Shepherd has provided the early childhood development facilities to house more than seventy 3 and 4 year old Head Start students.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
Offered through a collaboration with Free to Grow and Union Public Schools, this important opportunity to learn English is offered on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Graduate Equivalency Degree (GED)
Classes toward high school diploma equivalency are also offered offered on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Community Leadership Training
Healthy child development depends on strong families.  Strong families thrive in healthy communities.  Communities require strong leadership in order to become and remain healthy.  This course equips participants to become effective community leaders.  Current issues of interest for emerging community leadership include education, community safety, arts and athletic activities for children, and immigration concerns.

Vacation Bible School
During the summer, our Family Ministry Team coordinates a Vacation Bible School, open to the public.

Boy Scouts
Good Shepherd charters Boy Scout Troop 26 which meets on Monday evenings at the church from 7:30 - 9:00.

Several Dens from Cub Scout Pack 221 (Skelly Elementary) meet on Friday evenings at Good Shepherd.
